CHALLENGE:

Leitrim County Council awarded the Design Build Operate contract for a new wastewater treatment works at Carrick on Shannon to Response Engineering. The project was procured by public tender as a DBO contract with a long term operating contract of 20 years duration.

The design population equivalent for the plant is 11,500.

The contract also includes for the installation of 2 new pumping stations and rising mains, and the refurbishment of 7 existing pumping stations. Interim management of the existing WWTW until the new WWTW is operational is a contract requirement.

ANSWER:

Response Engineering designed, procured and installed all process plant for the works which includes a dual stream inlet works consisting of automatic screens, screenings washing and compaction and vortex type grit removal system.

Secondary treatment is effected by extended aeration in twin aeration tanks each equipped with a fine bubble diffused air system.

The twin tanks provide greater operational flexibility and ensure plant operation during maintenance. Two final clarifiers with half-bridge scrapers are provided.

Phosphorous reduction is achieved by ferric dosing and simultaneous precipitation. Sludge is thickened and dewatered by centrifuge to 20% DS.

PROCESS SUMMARY:
  • Inlet screening and screenings disposal
  • Grit removal
  • Stormwater storage
  • FBDA aeration system
